Frequently Asked Questions

A horse is considered to be a veteran once they reach the age of 15. However, some horses may start to show signs of aging and wear and tear younger than that, particularly if they’ve had many years of hard work and competition. In some cases, a horse may need veteran targeted support at young as 13. Other horses continue to thrive and remain highly active well into their 20s.

Older horses have some specific challenges and can require specialised care. The teeth are one area that can be particularly vulnerable and may require a veteran horse to be fed soaked hay, soaked hay cubes or a mash. As they struggle to consume forage and chew effectively, veteran horses can start to exhibit gut disturbances. Veteran horses can be prone to colic and other gut related discomfort, so it’s important to consider feeding a gut supplement. Joints can become tired, sore and inflamed and diseases such as arthritis can emerge. A preventative and management approach are both recommended with a high quality joint supplement. Finally, the liver should be specifically tended to as the equine liver is prone to weakening and disease as horses age. Feeding a liver support supplement that contains milk thistle seeds is especially helpful for older horses.

Boswellia is a powerful resin from the frankincense tree, which has a beneficial properties for health, particularly with respect to the joints. Boswellia is high in antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory properties that make it especially useful for horses with arthritis, other joint conditions and/or reductions in mobility.

Older horses are especially prone to liver problems. If your horse has been diagnosed with liver disease or your vet has recommended liver support for your horse, you’ll want to consider added Milk Thistle Seeds to their diet. Milk Thistle Seeds have liver protective and supporting properties and can be fed either in powdered/ ground form or whole.
